Painting the white wall, Um… White??

Painting Edgbaston white

If you are familiar with the area of Edgbaston, you will know at least two things. Firstly, the area is affluent, and secondly, that e very building has been painted white. It just seems to be the ‘done thing’. Occasionally I see that someone has been called out to paint the building, but unsurprisingly it always an over-coat of white again. As I left work today, an interesting object lesson came to me as I passed this decorator. It is the concept of our righteousness. In the scriptures, our righteousness (the good things that we do), is very often paralleled with our outer-clothing (See Col 3:8-14, Rev 3:18, Isa 61:10 & Job 29:14). In the case of these grand white buildings, it costs far more to wash the dirt off the walls regularly than it is to have them painted over with the more white paint. And besides, even after attempting to clean the walls, it is likely they could still appear dirty.

When Christ looks at us, it is much the same. It costs far more to ‘cleanse us from all unrighteousness’ than to just cover up our sin. And worse still, in many cases, we still look and feel filthy even after we our forgiven.

‘If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.’ 1 John 1:9

So why does God labour the harder way, what merit is there in washing us? Well firstly the answer is found in exploring the repercussions of covering things up:

‘He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.’ Proverbs 28:13

When understanding, what God’s purpose is in cleaning us thoroughly, we can see it is to actually make us look Glorious.

‘…Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.’ Ephesians 5:25-27

What a seriously beautiful thought, that God is doing this FOR US to look beautiful! And to think that the cost is His own life!!!!! Wow!
